Putting Smiles on the Faces of Veterans, One Fish at a Time. Beautiful weather combined with hungry fish provided for an unforgettable day on the water for Veteran Anglers who were invited by Anglers Anonymous of America Ventura Coast to fish the Channel Islands. For some of the Vets, this was their first time deep sea fishing, and for others this was an opportunity to share the rail. After a year of preparation and fundraising, Anglers Anonymous of America Ventura Coast completed another “Operation” by taking 133 veterans and active military guests fishing at Anacapa Island, on board 5 boats out of Channel Islands Sportfishing Center. Yellowtail, Whitefish and a variety of Rockfish accounted for some of the1,224 fish that were caught. A notable Catch was a White Seabass was brought in by Tobin Tacy from Santa Maria. Most of the boats started the day off fishing structure for Rockfish and White Fish on the submerged rock structures around Anacapa island, which was part of the plan in order to give the unexperienced Vets early opportunities. After getting a good share Rockfish the fleet moved to Anacapa Arch to fish for Yellowtail. The bight was on with Yellowtail boiling all around, reels started pealing, and excited veterans began to yell. Volunteers assisted in sharing techniques, tying hooks, while also hooking and handing off Yellowtail to those who were not lucky enough to get bit. The veterans and guests got a chance to experience some excellent fishing while taking in some awesome sights fishing close to the Arch overlooked by the Anacapa Lighthouse. After a fun filled day on the water, the boats returned to Channel Islands harbor so the veterans, volunteers and guests could enjoy a BBQ dinner provided by the Ventura Lions Club to wrap up the day.
